Subject: Pitching Stats, '96 Jays and Former Jays

Here are the Jays' 1996 pitching stats, sorted by Innings Pitched. TRA is Total Runs Allowed per 9 innings, including allegedly "unearned" runs, and RPG is from applying the Estimated Runs Produced formula on the pitcher stats, which sometimes suggests a pitcher was lucky or unlucky. But there were no really deceptive ERAs on the Jays last year:

Of the new guys, I was surprised that Plesac struck out hitters more often than Clemens, and his stats against (hits, walks, home runs) suggest he actually pitched better than his ERA. Of course you should add 15% to National League ERAs to correct for the change in leagues (but I didn't):

          Age W L ERA TRA RPG IP BA HR BB/9 K/9 I/G $m
  RClemens 33 BOS 10 13 3.63 3.93 3.90 242.2 .239 19 3.9 9.5 7.1 5.5

   DPlesac 34 PIT 6 5 4.09 4.48 3.79 70.1 .253 4 3.1 9.7 1.0 .9

The famous former Jay starters all pitched well when healthy:

          Age W L ERA TRA RPG IP BA HR BB/9 K/9 I/G $m
    DWells 33 BAL 11 14 5.14 5.30 4.89 224.1 .281 32 2.0 5.2 6.6 3.0
TStottlemy 31 STL 14 11 3.87 4.03 4.12 223.1 .233 30 3.7 7.8 6.6 3.8
   ALeiter 30 FLA 16 12 2.93 3.09 3.23 215.1 .201 14 5.0 8.4 6.5 2.7
      JKey 35 NYY 12 11 4.68 4.94 4.61 169.1 .264 21 3.1 6.2 5.6 1.8

So far, the Jays appear to have "won" the Risley/Cairo deal:

          Age W L ERA TRA RPG IP BA HR BB/9 K/9 I/G $m
  EHurtado 26 SEA 2 5 7.74 7.93 7.49 47.2 .312 10 5.7 6.8 3.0 .1

The M's should have gone after a former Jay leftie reliever instead:

          Age W L ERA TRA RPG IP BA HR BB/9 K/9 I/G $m
    GLloyd 29 MIL 2 4 2.82 3.35 3.83 51.0 .254 3 3.0 4.2 1.0 .2

Here are the rest of the former Jays, I think. The Jays experimented with Darwin in the wrong year. Weathers seemed a lot better in post- season than he did in regular-season:

For fun, I checked out the NL Cy Young award race. I guess Brown missed a few starts because he stayed in games slightly longer than Smoltz:

          Age W L ERA TRA RPG IP BA HR BB/9 K/9 I/G $m
   JSmoltz 29 ATL 24 8 2.94 3.30 2.72 253.2 .218 19 2.0 9.8 7.2 5.5

Hentgen was clearly the best pitcher in the AL last year. Pettitte was just 10th on the Support-Neutral Won/Loss report. Can't resist pointing out that Appier's arm didn't fall off despite some doom and gloom predictions:

Notes:
No park or league adjustments were made.
 Data is taken from http://rainbow.rmii.com/~doug
(unofficial data, but looks pretty accurate, and does not add together
stats from different teams, so Jays stats are as Jays only, which is
   what I wanted).

Tomorrow (I hope): Jays '97 projected record
